Learning Reflection (16th) of Seminar in English Language Teaching Course and Implication

Seminar in English Language Teaching Course is searching for information concerning English language pedagogy and problems in teaching and learning English. By the teacher assigned me to study from variety sources such as article, research, ad online resources which are necessary in order for teachers to keep up-to-date in the ELT (English Language Teaching) field. Moreover, teacher assigned me to work in group like a collaborative class. Then, we have to  discuss and analyze of readings and current problems in English language pedagogy.

What we learned form this course?

1. Global English: using the English Language as a common means of communication across cultures-a lingua franca. Also known as International English and Common English.

2. Contexts of English teaching: It is widely recognized that second language (L2) mental lexicon must be independent of its first language (L1) counterpart, if learners are to use the target language effectively and fluently.

The purpose for the L2 vocabulary is to be stored in much the same way as L1, which has two significant implications:
  • learners do not access their L2 lexicon by means of translating and so can save processing time while improving their fluency and
  • L1 does not interfere and so the target language produced is more native-like.

3. Factors affecting English Language Teaching and Learning:  There are many factors hinder the quality of English such as uninteresting teaching style, insufficient time for communicative activities, grammar-driven teaching, unclear instructions, large class sizes, teachers’ limited ability in classroom organization, teachers’ limited use of teaching aids and technology, and students’ lack of confidence in using oral English in class activities.

4. Problems of English Language Teaching: There are manys problems such as Teacher's problems, Students' problems and Environment learning problems.

5. ICT and English Language Teaching and Learning: T provides training in the application of pedagogical principles in teaching languages with technology and promotes the effective use of ICT tools and open resources in support of quality language teaching and learning.

6. Trends in ELT:

There are 9 trends as follows:
Trend 1: Changes in Perspectives on English Language Teaching and Learning
Trend 2: Changes in Goals of English Language Teaching and Learning
Trend 3: Changes in Teaching Approaches
Trend 4: Changes in Teaching Content, Curriculum Design, and Assessment
Trend 5: Expanding the Dimension of Communicative Competence
Trend 6: Changes in Views of an Effective English Educator
Trend 7: Early Start in Learning English
Trend 8: Rapid Development and Integration of Information Technology in ELT
Trend 9: Changing Roles and Increasing Responsibilities of Teachers

What is easy in this course?

In my opinion, I think this course must to read articles that  related to the teaching and learning English language. Which is something that is difficult for me, but   I like the teacher when teacher assigned us to work in groups. It is making  smoother and easier, because I think we have  to accept other comments. I like to work in  group, because I enjoy learning rather than learning alone.

What is the difficult in this course and how to solve the problems?

For me, I think the difficult for me is vocabulary, because some words I never seen before. In the articles, researches have  many academic words. So, I solve my problems by searched the meaning from the dictionary websites such as Cambridge dictionary and Thai-English Dictionary.

What about attitude in learning?

For learning in this course, I think it's quite difficult, because as the subjects to read, analyze, discuss, and have to use and apply in the future as an English teacher. This course is a useful  for being a teacher in the future, because the information about learning English. Sometimes the teacher assigned to read and study articles, it is quite much, because the 4th year students have a lot of works. Therefore, I think. should take this course to study in the 3th year students would be better. Overall, I like the way of teaching that working together as a group. Because it's more fun than studying individual.

What are the implications in the future?

The knowledge obtained from this course There are benefits to being an English teacher in the future, because the trend of English teaching is always changing. Teachers need to be stylish at all times. What I've learned to I applied in English teaching, such as the teaching CLT in  Thailand,  students should understand and be able to use it efficiently using the scaffolding theory of teaching methods which are Vykotsky Theory appropriate with context for learning and teaching English in Thailand.
