Learning Reflection (5th) of Seminar in English language Teaching Course

For  this week, teacher assigned me studied about "The roles of English Language Education in Asian context" which is a research of Bok-Myung Chang, Namseoul University. She studied an surveyed the history of English Language Education in Asian countries : Singapore, Philippine, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. Then, the representative of other groups had to present to the class.

The purposes is to trace the dispersal of English from the 18th century and the development of English in Asian countries, to explain the development and characteristics of English language education policies in Asian countries, and to emphasize the important role of English education.

The roles of English language education in Asian countries can be defined into 3 categories:

1. NNS (Non-Native speakers) interactions in communicating through English for encourage their interactions and to create the environment to activate their interactions in daily life.

2. To emphasize the bi-directionality in communicating among NS and NNS in globalized world.

3. To acknowledge the effectiveness of NNS teachers in teaching English in Asian countries and cultivate good NNESTs (Nonnative English-speaking Teachers)

In conclusion, Asian Englishes can play the important roles like these: to teach English as a way of speeding up national development, to English as a way of understanding other cultures, and to teach English as a tool of international communication in the globalized world.

The difficult is about reading. The research had many content so, I took for long time. I think I should focused on the important information and comprehend the text that I read.

For the last, about my feeling for learning in this week, teacher gave more time for discuss in group, made me didn't feel pressured and happy in learning. Thank you. :)
